Mark R Smith

Mark R. Smith’s work employs modernist principles of form along with a vernacular type of visual language that allows for the possibility of abstraction to compete with narrative, and material flatness to compete with perspectival illusion, for dominance within a given work.  This metaphorical visual conflict is employed as a means to examine personal, social, and political dichotomies as well as the relationship between the individual and the larger social organism.  Smith lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
